Saturday 14th – Newport Quayside / Sunday 15th September 2019 – Ryde Seafront

 

Hundreds of classic owners agreed the 2018 event was the best Isle of Wight International Classic Car show to date, although organiser Victor Gallucci explained that after 17 years of classics visiting the Island, each year he looked to improve and 2019 will be even bigger and better. The dates for both days have now been confirmed and for those planning their first Cross-Solent visit the simple truth is book early. Victor does enjoy some fantastic support via Wight Link Ferries transporting hundreds of cars, loaded with enthusiasts across the Solent for the ‘charity driven’ two-day festival. The Saturday will be held at the Newport Quay venue from 10.00am. Alongside the River Medina in the centre of the Island; Saturday is traditionally the quieter day of the weekend but visitors stream in from early doors to take advantage of some unique and rare machines on view. Last year the American car section increased dramatically drawing stunning stateside V8’s from as far north as Yorkshire. The islands American Car Club (ACIOW) always attend in force but with fellow enthusiasts joining from the mainland visitors enjoy an impressive ‘Yank’ showing. Motorbikes and mopeds became a large part of the show in 2018 and for next year their will be more two wheel classics on display

Sunday’s Ryde seafront display stretches along the Esplanade for a couple of miles two and three deep. Not many events can count on the full support of the town council; this year I quizzed Ryde Town Mayor Malcolm Ross about the events future and the options to secure even more display space for this popular show. No doubt the Mayors interest in the classic scene is a bonus as we toured the venue twice choosing his favourites and talking to owners. The prize for ‘Most Unusual Car 2016’ went to Colin & Jack Budden and their very famous Hotrod known as the Boston Strangler which drew a crowd all weekend and wowed the judges. Complete contrast but equally inspiring was ‘Best in Show 2016’ winner 1956 Vauxhall Cresta brought along from Somerset by three time show visitor Brian Kent and he was totally thrilled with his prize, including the Classic Oil supplied by Morris Lubricants. The ‘Best Group 2016’ winners went to the WOKR – Willys Overland Knight Registry, many having travelled from across the UK.
